$1000 Stimulus Check Can Be Claimed By May 2024

A $1000 stimulus check was sent to the citizens of New Mexico state in July 2023. In addition, the government also announced a refundable income tax rebate of $1000 for the New Mexicans meeting eligibility criteria

Please note that the $1000 stimulus check was only for the citizens of New Mexico, and they can also claim the same amount of the refundable tax credit if they file their 2021 Tax Return by May 2024. However, a person can only claim one of them – either a tax credit or stimulus check (relief payment)

How to Claim the Payment

The $1000 stimulus check was administered by the Human Services Department of New Mexico. It was meant for those residents who had a low income and who did not intend or qualify to receive the tax rebate.

A total of 15 million dollars were appropriated to send the payment. The stimulus or relief payments were not automatic. A person was required to apply by providing their information. The payments were intended to be sent until the funds expire. Most people either received $500 or $1000 from this relief payment

What are the eligibility requirements for a $1000 Stimulus Check?

This payment was for those who have not received any rebate from the 2021 PIT Return. Those who received the tax rebate associated with filing of 2021 PIT Return were ineligible to get this stimulus check.

Check the eligibility –

  • The person should be living in New Mexico and should have a low income.
  • The person should have a valid SSN or ITIN
  • They shouldn’t have received a tax rebate associated with filing the 2021 Personal Income Tax Return.

All the payments have been made in July 2023, and there will not be any further rounds of stimulus payments.

Most people think that the government of New Mexico will send a $1000 stimulus check if they submit their tax return by May 2024. However, they are not entirely wrong, but the information is somehow misplaced.

Instead of a Stimulus check, people will receive a refundable tax rebate if they file their 2021 PIT Return by May 2024. Those individuals who live in New Mexico have to file their 2021 personal income tax return by May 31, 2024, to get this tax rebate.

Additionally, residents don’t have to submit any applications to get their tax rebate. All they need to do is file their 2021 PIT Return before the mentioned deadline.

More information on the Refundable Tax Rebate can be learned by visiting the authorized web portal of the Taxation & Revenue Department of New Mexico.

How much is the New Mexico Tax Rebate?

The tax rebate was introduced by the government in light of the increasing consumer prices. The New Mexico Legislature not only approved a $1000 stimulus check but also approved the tax rebates for the eligible tax payers who file their tax return by May 2024

The tax rebate can pay $1000 to the people who file the 2021 Personal Income Tax Return as married couples filing jointly, surviving spouses and heads of households. Additionally, individual taxpayers and married filing separately will get a $500 tax rebate.

Please note that the claimants shouldn’t be declared as dependents on someone else’s return. People who have already filed their 2021 PIT Returns are not required to do anything. If they received a refund as a direct deposit, they will get this rebate as a direct deposit as well.

If a person has relocated, they need to submit their updated information through their TAP account or by sending Form RPD-41260. This will ensure that the payments are sent to the correct address.

In case a person’s banking details have changed, they will receive the rebate via paper check. However, if a person’s ex-spouse owes any debt when they were married (joint liability), the amount can be reduced to make up the difference

If someone has taken a divorce and has previously filed the tax return as married filing jointly, the one who is listed as the primary filer will get the rebate. Both of them need to figure out how to divide the rebate amongst themselves.
